ONLINE TALK: THE WORKHOUSE - FROM PAUPER REFUGE TO POSH PAD, WEDNESDAY 12TH MARCH 2025, 6-7PM

Following our successful visit to the Lord Leycester Hospital in March 2024 we are delighted to welcome Matthew Vaughan from Donald Insall Associates, the conservation architects who carried out the restoration of this incredibly significant medieval site, to talk about how the project team made it all happen. The talk will explore how the intricate and sensitive upgrade works were achieved and how the building was made more accessible to the public. Above: The timber-beamed Great Hall at the Lord Leycester Hospital has been serving food for over 700 years. Today visitors are welcomed to the new café where, in 1617, the Great Banquet of Warwick was held. Bottom Right: The Windsor Union Workhouse was built to designs of George Gilbert Scott and William Moffatt between 1839 and 1840.

Join us for this online talk with Peter Higginbotham, who will look at the evolution of the workhouse and the treatment of its inmates from the 17th century until the arrival of the welfare state and National Health Service in 1948. The talk will also chart developments in workhouse archi tecture and the fate of the hundreds of buildings that once housed the nation's poor.
